Germany Deploys Frigate to Greenland Waters Amid US Pressure on Denmark

Germany has deployed the frigate Saxony to Arctic waters near Greenland in a show of support for Denmark, amid ongoing pressure from US President Donald Trump over the autonomous territory.

The 143-metre warship left Wilhelmshaven on January 6 carrying 250 troops and anti-aircraft missiles. It has joined NATO's Standing Maritime Group 1 in the North Atlantic.

Background

Trump has repeatedly suggested the United States should acquire Greenland, pressuring Denmark to cede control of the territory. Danish officials have rejected these demands.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Germany stands in full solidarity with Denmark. He said international law cannot be overridden by power politics.

This comes as European governments have begun contingency planning in response to US statements on Greenland. German officials have described the deployment as a demonstration of commitment to NATO allies.

Military Presence

The German naval supply ship Berlin made a port call to Nuuk last year. It was the first visit by a German warship to Greenland. The 175-metre vessel carries fuel supplies, medical facilities, and two helicopters.

Denmark's Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said Greenland was considered a low-tension area when he took office two years ago. He said that assessment has changed.

German submarines, frigates, and maritime patrol aircraft have been assigned to northern Atlantic patrols, according to German defence officials.

Regional Response

Denmark, Canada, and Norway have formed a security partnership to coordinate defence in the northern Atlantic, officials said.

The UK is reportedly in discussions with European partners about potential NATO operations in the Arctic region.

European officials have raised the possibility of sanctions against the United States if tensions escalate further, according to diplomatic sources familiar with the discussions.

Greenland

Reactions among Greenland residents are mixed, according to local reports. Some have welcomed increased security presence while others have expressed concern about their territory becoming a focal point of international tensions.

Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory with a population of around 56,000, holds significant strategic value due to its location and natural resources.
